On With Life and Ankeny Police Partner for Helmet Awareness
Ankeny, IA- On With Life and the Ankeny Police Department are passing out free helmets and ice cream this summer to raise awareness for helmet use! For the next month, Ankeny Police will be handing out coupons to kids riding their bikes around Ankeny: either a free helmet coupon if the child isn’t wearing a helmet, or a free beginner cup of ice cream as a reward to a child they see wearing a helmet.
“The Ankeny Police Department believes in being proactive in the prevention of brain injuries and concussions,” Chief of Police Darius Potts said. “The partnership between the Ankeny Police Department and On With Life‘s Helmets Save Lives Campaign will bring awareness to this important issue and also provide the opportunity to reduce these types of injuries.”
Iowa is one of three states with no helmet laws in place, motorcycles and bicycles alike. Forty-seven states have some sort of helmet regulation in place, and 28 states require minors to wear a helmet while riding a bike, scooter, motorcycle or other type of motorized vehicle.
“On With Life is passionate about advocating for brain injury awareness,” said Jean Shelton, CEO of On With Life. “This fun promotion allows us to unite our voices with the Ankeny Police Department as we raise awareness for Iowa’s absent helmet laws.”
Children who received a free helmet coupon will be able to redeem the coupon starting July 27th with an event from 9:00am-12:00 pm at the Ankeny Police Station, 411 SW Ordnance Road. This Saturday morning event will provide refreshments and an opportunity for children to pick out a new helmet to keep them safe while biking. These coupons can continue to be redeemed on any weekday, while supplies last, at the Ankeny Police Station. Children who received a free beginner cup coupon will be able to redeem this coupon at Orange Leaf Ankeny until October 15th, 2019.
“We’re proud to be a part of the Ankeny community and collaborate with other organizations like the police department and On With Life to celebrate safety in our great city,” said Alan Ruden, owner of Orange Leaf Ankeny.
This partnership with the Ankeny Police Department is part of On With Life’s helmet awareness campaign, which will include partnering with Raygun on a custom t-shirt, handing out 1,000 free helmets at the Iowa State Fair and holding its fifth annual Wear Your Helmet at Work event on August 12.
